The original railroad north from Athens, AL ran to Nashville, TN via Elkmont, AL and Columbia, TN. Around World War One L&N built a new main from Athens to Brentwood, TN, via Lewisburg, TN. The far track in the middle of the photo is the current CSX main, which is the line that runs through Lewisburg. The closer track in the middle is the remnant of the old Nashville & Decatur Rail Road, that exists as a remnant in Athens to serve several industries. A few miles north of here the N&D is a walking trail now. The track on the left and right of this panorama (low and grassy) is the house track for the L&N freight depot, which is now a military museum.
