LC-A 120 with Coco Alexander

Our beloved friend Coco Alexendar took the new LC-A 120 to the park, a concert, and into the snow. Find out more about Coco’s approach to photography and what she likes to do beyond photography!

Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into photography!

I suppose I just like taking pictures. That’s how it started and that’s probably how it will stay. Taking photos of my friends and the bands I like to listen to is where I find my most rewarding work.

What did you think about the LC-A 120?

I absolutely adore this camera! It’s sharp, it’s simple, and it takes glorious multiple exposures. The fact that it can fit in my purse is a huge plus, and almost every shot I’ve taken with it has come out just as I imagined. You couldn’t ask for a better compact 120.

What do you like about analog photography and how does it differ from digital?

As I imagine it would be hard for a parent to choose a favorite child, I struggle to choose between analog and digital. I love both formats equally. Their differences make them unique. One of the things I love about film is its ability to change. It can be pushed and cross processed and sometimes the developing process leaves you little surprises, like light leaks and scratches, that give each photo its own personality. I find that when I shoot digital I can be more of a perfectionist. It gives me the freedom to take my time and approach shooting one subject multiple ways to see what looks best. With film, I rarely take more than one or two photos of the same thing.

Where does your inspiration come from?

I’m not really great with words (might explain why I chose to work in a medium that doesn’t require me to use them much), so I struggle to define and articulate where my inspiration comes from. I can’t pinpoint what catches my eye or creates a spark, but I always try to stay open to feelin’ it. If I can feel it and follow it, that’s all that really matters in the end.

What advice would you give to other young photographers out there?

Always do what needs to be done to get THE shot and never let the perfect light pass you by. You’ll remember the photographs you didn’t take sometimes more than the ones you did.

What do you love to do beyond photography?

Eating good food with friends is probably my favorite past time. Sharing meals and wine and stories should be a requisite hobby, if you ask me. Tromping in the snow or laying on the beach are also my favorite pastimes, but I usually end up taking photos then, too.

What does you creative process look like?

Again, it’s hard for me to find the right words to answer this question. I think that’s because I don’t really have a defined creative process. There’s no specific starting point that I always come back to, and no real end goal, other than to make great work. I just try to embrace inspiration when it comes, surround myself with people and places that move me, and hope that the right image somehow manages to go from my head to my hand to the lens.
