Dr. Lab Experiment Two: Bleach & Shout - 50’s Effect

17

Meet Dr. Lab aka hti. Straight from the HQ Lomography Archive where he has been whipping up some weird and wonderful experiments just for you. Many thanks Dr. Lab for sharing your laboratory experience, secret techniques and analogue passion in the second of his special edition Film Freak Tipsters. Now come on everyone bleach & shout!

The examples seen in this effect were done with Agfa CT Precisa 100 35mm. Dr. Lab recommends x-pro film when attempting any of these film techniques because the popping colours achieved by cross processing are what really accentuate these great effects.

What You’ll Need

• 1 Roll Agfa CT Precisa 100 35mm.
• 1 Martini Shaker
• 1 oz Generic Surface Cleaner
• 250 ml of Boiling Water
• 1 Dark Room (try your bathroom)
• 1 Hair-Dryer

Step One:

Put your roll of film a martini shaker and add first boiling water then generic surface cleaner to the mix. Then attach lid securely and shake for about 4-5 minutes.

Once your film cocktail is thoroughly shaken (not stirred) be sure to rinse the film in clean cold* water afterwards thoroughly

*Cold water is a must! Film has a chemical emulation that needs to be fixed by cooling.

Step Two:

With your rinsed film at the ready you need to find a nice dark room like a washroom with the door closed. Make sure that there are no light leaks because now you need to pull the film out of the roll to blow-dry it. It will take about 10 minutes of blow-drying until the film goes from slimy and wet to perfectly dry and normal feeling again, which is what you need it to be like before loading in your camera.

Step Three:

Load and shoot! Then cross process as normal and try to contain your excitement while you wait for the results.

As you can see the effects in the case of bleach & shout are quite dreamy and faded. A look any film freak will be sure to dig! Please do share your results with us if you try this at home!

    Hi.
I try the bleach process this weekend.
I took what i found home. A Fuji sensia100 roll and a botlle of cillit bang with feew drops of white vinegar..
it's what i do step by steps

1: I found a bottle of "cillit bang" and a bit of white vinegar and a empty can of peanuts
    2: Boilled water
3: Take the hair-dryer of my roomate
4: Make sure my bathroom is dark and organize everyting (mix cillit bang, white vinegar and hot water) and remember where is the hair-dryer...
5: Make the dark and take the film of the case
6: Put the fil 4 or 5 minutes in your "soup" (try to dont put the case in the liquid)
7: Clean the film with cold water
8: Dry the film with Hair-dryer, it's a bit long but be sure that you film is realy dry (you can feel it whith your fingers)
9: Put the film back into the case
    10: Load in tour camera
    11: Shoot!!
12: Go to the lab ask for cross process and wait until Friday for the result. (such a long time!)

Who else try that this weekend?

@chenrezig : ich denke generic surface cleaner is ganz normaler Fussboden Reiniger, also Allzwechreiniger. Ich habe das heute mal mit 2 Filmen gemacht, einmal mit Allzweckreiniger und einmal eine mischung aus Kolrix(nur ganz wenig) und Spüli. Mal sehen wies wird ;)
