Cathedral of Holy Spirit in Minsk

Cathedral of the Descent of the Holy Spirit — (Belarusian: Кафедральны сабор Сашэсця Святога Духа) in Minsk, Belarus is dedicated to the Holy Spirit. It is the central cathedral of the Belarusian Orthodox Church.

The cathedral dates back to 1633-1642, when the Bernardine monastery was built, at a time when the city was in centre of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. The building was damaged by fire in 1741 and required the reconstruction of the monastery.

Since 70-ies of XIX century former cloister nestled Svyatoduhovsky Orthodox monastery. Now it is known as the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit.

The miraculous icon of Our Lady of Minsk, which is considered the heavenly defender of the city is kept in the cathedral. Also in the temple are th relics of St. Sophia Slutskaya, who all her life fought for the preservation of orthodoxy on the Belarusian land.
