Ah, the mighty Retina! I see you have impeccable taste in cameras. (Great shots! I just loaded a roll of Ektar into my 1a – that glorious Xenar lens should produce some interesting colours.)

@anttihoo %-))) I have two non-functional cameras, aka arette and retina iif, with xenar lenses, so I bought this retina partially out of nostalgia:

also it was a bit of mistake, I thought that retinas have rangefinders while retinettes are viewfinders, well, it is still a decent camera which looks pretty good!

@aleatorius Oh well, I think that's almost a blessing in disguise... While I wouldn't mind owning a rangefinder Retina, the slim lines of my bare-bones 1a do look better! (It's a bit like with my Voigtländer Vito B – I wanted an early model with the tiny, squinty viewfinder, as the larger, more user-friendly window ruins the stylish look.)

@anttihoo Once I found in a thrift shop a kiev 3a (also 1957 year) -- which lasted three rolls until its shutter died. but I discovered a joy of precise focusing! kiev and contaxes have widest rangefinders, so you can really hit a spot even wide open:

I may just repair it one day.

@anttihoo btw, I do prefer viewfinders to SLRs, I thnik SLRs give such a nice picture in the viewfinder, so you get distracted by this picture and shoot according to it. While viewfinders do not disctract you too much, actually you want to get done rather quickly %-)))

@aleatorius So true! With an SLR, it's easy to get lost inside the viewfinder and see the world only in terms of focus and composition – and forget where you are and what's actually happening. Sometimes that's exactly what I'm after, but these days I enjoy the ease and unpredictability of old, zone-focusing viewfinders more... Capturing things properly is harder, but I get to ”see” them better while I'm doing it!

@anttihoo yes, from SLR results look somewhat too calculated and thus -- somewhat boring. To use rangefinder is a bit of a compromise for me -- their viewfinders are usually not that great, so one does just do a job of matching two images, that's all. %-) but it is possible to miss the moment while focusing.

@anttihoo I like the idea behind this viewfinder (never had one) camera-wiki.org/wiki/Kontur

@aleatorius Oh, that Kontur gadget looks clever! Trust Voigtländer to come up with something simple but effective...
