Lomo Safari

After a month teaching photography for teenagers my old man always finished his course with a Safari. The idea was quite simples but lots of joy. All students had to do an urban Safari after 9 subjects – a 36 exp roll makes at least 4 photos each. After taking all photos my dad helped the kids curating their own photos and presenting them to the class. It didn’t matter what camera, film, technique you were using but, how did you expressed yourself, because, the most important thing was that all 9 subjects had to be shot on the very same roll.

It was back in 1984 and I was just 5, but I remember trying a little of that.
Now we’re a lovely bunch of film lovers society and I’m here back to invite you to do the same, let’s prepare our weapons and do some hunting.

Here are 9 subjects I’m proposing for this first Lomo Safari

1 – A chair
A classic one. If you neve tried, here is your chance.

2 – Love
Is there anything else to say about it?

3 – A street sign
We all love them

4 – Red
In my opinion London is red, that’s why I’m choosing it

5 – A stranger
Go on, it’s one of the golden rules

6 – Your feet
An awful cliche that you all do. But how to stand out on a flood of feet photos?

7 – Some on from your family
Show us a little bit of yourself

8 – The smell of coffee
I rather beer, but maybe coffe we’ll see something different with coffee

9 – You
Not your self-portrait, but you. Think

I’m really looking forward to see your album.
And remember JUST 9 PHOTOS

but, do we have to take 4 pictures of the same subject? if for example we are shooting a stranger, it has to be four pictures of the same stranegr or can we shoot 4 different strangers?

@littlekoala you have to curate yourself and choose the best of each subject, therefore 9 photos only, one of each subject. Good luck

this is a great project. I'll try to do it, but I'm so behind on my scanning that this might take a while, hope you still accept submissions around Xmas time.... Can we do multiple exposures?

Yes, definitely you can do MX. B&W, X-pro, whatever you feel comfortable doing, as long as you have the 9 shots all together from the same roll.

@djramsay: I like your pictures, even though you cheated by using old pictures ;) I'm regretting my choice of camera for this safari, though I guess part of the challenge is making do with what you got.

@ghidini: Is there a limit? I want to do this, I really need a photography project in my life now... but it may take a while 'cause I want to do as you said, in one roll... is there a deadline? :)

And I didn't even cheat a lot (Love and Family are a bit dubious. My Family pic was meant to be the Love pic, but than I wouldn't have Family, so the Love pic is now a bit non-romantic. Ah well.). It was the first time I used this camera, so on the whole I'm fairly happy.

It is official - I TOTALLY ruined my Lomo Safari. Contact batteries issues with my LC-A (I'm stupid and I don't look at the batteries red light). 3 months with this project, I know the pictures would be amazing... I'm so sad! I'll try this again (later, 'cause now I'm Lomo Safari traumatized). I think it's an amazing idea, I really enjoyed it. Well, not the end. :/ I'll write a blog entry with the 4 pictures that came out... :(
