Frozen Lake Champlain

Last day of safe ice on Lake Champlain. These pictures are more grainy than I thought they would be. I suspect something amiss with my chemistry.

Champ lives in the deep, well under the ice of course!

@tomczykd Thanks Dominik...the Lake doesn't always freeze this solid but this year we had a good old fashion winter. I could have walked over to New York, a good twenty miles across.

How is the last day of safe ice determined?

@neufotomacher For the case of Lake Champlain the Coast Guard issues an advisory for whether the ice is still safe. The Coast Guard station for Lake Champlain is just to the right of the view in this photograph. The day after I took this photo, the CG issued its advisory. It was actually a very warm day when I took this photo and I almost stepped into a hole in the ice at the edge of the stone break wall which warms up quick in the sun.
