Nobuyuki Kobayashi & Platinum Portraits of Gods

For Japanese photographer Nobuyuki Kobayashi, the gods are found in nature. As taught in the oldest religion in Japan, Shintoism, nature is deemed the most sacred of all. Hence, his scenic imagery of water, trees, bushes, leaves, greenery, stones and other objects of nature are representations of the deities themselves.

Kobayashi applies his platinum prints on to washi paper (Hosokawa paper), which is a trademark medium among Japanese crafts and artistry. The paper is said to have the lasting archival quality of 1000 years. Befitting for the images of gods, indeed.
