5 Things to Think About When You’re a Photographer

Sometimes when you’re a photographer, it’s hard not to be a critic. You always think about ways on how an image could be improved in terms of lighting, film type used, aperture, shutter speed, framing, angle, composition, and the list just goes on and on. We get it, photography just covers a wide range of subjects and that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and preference. Whatever floats your boat, right?

But let’s be real, do we really have to make everything the best for OUR liking? Can’t we all just get along? That’s exactly our topic for today as we list down some ways to be a more compassionate photographer.

Photography is a Journey

Aside from being a totally cool hobby and neat way to express ourselves, photography can also be considered a journey. That also means that we are all on different paths and stages in our beloved art/hobby/career/pastime/lifestyle. Some are more advanced than others, some more serious while some are experimental, but whatever stage you’re in; always remember to take it easy on others and let them enjoy the ride. Everyone was once a beginner, right?

To Each Their Own

While we can’t be fans of all cameras, we also shouldn’t be too uptight when we hear not-so-nice things about our favorite gear. It happens — everyone has something to say about certain things and life would be easier if we don’t get too upset about it. You know your stuff, you love that camera line and that’s all that matters. As long as you’re having fun with your equipment, who are those people to tell you otherwise? And besides, it’s totally normal to be a fan of many nameplates and cameras! Just make sure you keep your GAS in check.

Educate, Replicate

This one has something to do with photography being a journey. Remember that bit about everyone being a beginner once in their journey? Well, that’s true, so be sure to offer a smile and a helping hand to people who are just starting. Be at the ready to educate people on what the basics are, just the way your mentors did when you were just a greenhorn. Inspire people to learn and become better at what they want to do. Wouldn’t it be nice to have been the mentor of a future photographic genius?

Not Everything is a Contest

It’s cool to join contests! Aside from keeping up your competitive spirit, you also get to see the work of other talented photographers! That’s the reason why we are always doing Rumbles for the Community — to promote healthy competition and a fun atmosphere so let’s keep it that way. You don’t always have to be the best or the most skilled. Sometimes, being a photographer means admiring other people’s work just for the love of photography itself. No pressure, no hassle, just pure love for the craft.

Take it Easy

Don’t get us wrong, it’s great to be focused when it comes to photography (pun not intended but apologies, all the same.) Being able to concentrate on your vision and acquiring the necessary skills to achieve your goals are wonderful ways to jumpstart a great portfolio and more so, a flourishing career in photography. Good for you, and we’re proud to see you live your dreams! Although sometimes, it wouldn’t hurt to take things lightly. Missed a shot? Got light leaks? Meh, don’t worry about it!

There’s always the next frame so don’t beat yourself up! You’re a photographer and you can do better next time. And as a Lomographer, learn how to embrace the little imperfections. Life is actually more beautiful that way.
