Shoot with Film that Challenges You

Taking photographs is a lovely exercise. We’re sure that all of us here in the community can attest to that. It’s really an immersive experience — from the moment you think about what images you’ll capture up until it’s time to hit the shutter. It takes you on a different ride, every time.

And just like any exercise, you should also progress as you learn. One way to do this is to try different films. Each type of film has its own unique characteristics and shooting with new films regularly will help to keep you on your toes. Let’s count the ways why this can be a great creative exercise for you.

It Makes You Think

Having a favorite film type, speed, and brand is great. You got it all figured out and that’s impressive. Mastery comes from constant practice, and now that you’re great at using it, you have more time to experiment with other films. Using a different type of film makes you think about every shot more since you’re unfamiliar with it. It keeps you alert and focused because you want the next shot to be an absolute success. New films force you to think this way and sometimes, that’s the mindset you need.

You Put in More Effort

One habit of a good photographer is that they always make a conscious effort to take better photos. It’s not enough to simply take more photos and hope that some frames turn out nice. They always put in more effort to make sure that the images they get are indeed worthy of being added to their portfolio. Shooting with new film makes you do that, too.
