Newcomer of the Week: Marc (@marcbessant)

Marc (@marcbessant), our Community newcomer from Birmingham, United Kingdom, prefers shooting in black and white, resulting in visually and emotionally compelling photographs. Not one to care about rules, he focuses more on capturing the mood of the moment and connecting with his muses. In this interview, he opens up about his passion for analogue and what being in the Lomography Community means to him.

Please tell us something about yourself and what you do.

Hi, my name is Marc from Birmingham UK. I work as a support worker and I am a proud dad. During my free time, I enjoy listening to music and taking as many photos (mainly black and white) as possible.

How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

I found the Community by accident. I needed more black and white film and stumbled across Lomography while I was looking. I instantly felt at home. There were so many different types of photography and people didn't seem to be worried about how the photos will turn out or what would be considered "perfect". I instantly loved this as I feel all photography should have a personal, human element attached to it and should not be Photoshop-perfect. Everyone in the Community also seemed to be here for the same reason and are very friendly. This I feel is a rare thing to come across on the internet.

As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

I think it would have to be Rule number 10 (Don't worry about any rules). Before Lomography, I would try to make every shot perfect. I would often overthink the situation and beat myself up if a photo didn't turn out the way I imagined it to be. These days I just look through the viewfinder at something that interests me and hit the shutter to capture the moment. So far, I have been very pleased with the results and even most of the mistakes, I have been enjoying this new freedom of not worrying.

In this digital age, why still film?

I enjoy the process of shooting film much more than digital. I love going out with nothing but a camera loaded with a roll of film and knowing I only have 36 shots. I love not knowing how the photos are going to turn out and I still get excited waiting for my prints to come back from the lab. I also love the look of film. It's something I feel that digital just can't recreate. Digital is too perfect and I feel it loses something because of this. I am not a fan of taking hundreds of shots on a digital camera and then turning them into something different using photo editing just so they can be stored on a computer never to be seen again. To me, taking that one shot and waiting to see how the print comes out is much more rewarding. Not that there is anything wrong with digital — it's just not for me.

Your favorite analog camera as of the moment? Why?

My favorite camera at the moment has to be my Lomo LC-Wide. I always shot with my Minolta X-700 and a 50 mm prime lens. Since buying the LC-Wide, it has become my go-to camera. It's light, easy-to-use and has an amazing lens, especially when used with a black and white film. Having a 17 mm lens makes you think differently when shooting and also makes it a lot of fun to use.

What is the Lomography camera you’d want to have someday?

The camera I really wanted was the LC-Wide which I am now lucky enough to own. If I had to pick another, it would probably be La Sardina as I really like the design.

Any song, book, or movie you live by?

Not really. I love to read and listen to music but I don't think I could pick just one. It would depend on my mood at the time.

Share your current favorite Lomograph, could be yours or a friend’s. Why?

This photo by @merelgroebbe is probably my favorite at the moment. I'm not sure why. It has a certain moodiness to it that just drew me to it.

Any Community member you look up to? If so, why him or her?

There are too many to pick one. There are so many great photos and I'm constantly looking through Community members' photos for inspiration.

What are you looking forward to in our Community?

I look forward to seeing everyone's photos and talking to people in the Community from different parts of the world who all enjoy doing the same thing. Maybe one day it would be nice to set up a project with other Lomographers who live in the same area.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us and welcome to the Lomography Community, Marc!
