Camera Modification Tips: Splitzing your Lubitel 166+
20 48 Share TweetUsing a Splitzer with my Lomo LC-A+ is lots of fun. I often walk the same places so I often photograph the same things, but thanks to the Splitzer there is an easy way to change things up a bit. And it has given me some great, unexpected results!
About a month ago I started using my Lubitel 166+ and fell head over heels in love with it. It can compete with my LC-A+ on any terrain (and will beat in most), but the one thing it was missing is a Splitzer. So I decided I would make my own. It turned out better than I expected, the first results were amazing!
What you'll need is an LC-A+ Splitzer and a 40.5mm filter ring (you don't need the actual filter, so it could be a broken one). Those of you who decided to try out my previous tipsters on making a filter mount for your LC-A+ are in luck, as you already have some of the parts you'll need (that is if you haven't thrown them out). Last time I used the back plate, this time I use the plastic discs. So basically you get two awesome gadgets for the price of one.
First, you dismantle the Splitzer by taking out the thin metal ring that holds the plastic discs in place. If you do this carefully you can reuse all the parts you take out. For this Lubitel Splitzer you'll only need the plastic discs, but the holder and the thin metal ring can be used to make yourself a multifunctional filter holder for your LC-A+, holding anything from close up filters to color filters.
Next, dismantle the filter. You need to unscrew the thin metal rim without breaking it or damaging the thread. The easiest way is by using some fine pointed tweezer (look carefully and you'll find two small indentations on the rim). After removing the rim, take out the glass, which you won't need.
Now you need to put these parts back together, in order:
- Take the filter ring.
- Drop the red plastic disc in the ring.
- Drop the black plastic disc on top of the red disc
- Carefully screw the thin metal rim back in the ring (use the tweezers).
Stop when the rim almost touches the disc below and make sure the discs have enough room to turn freely. Secure the rim in that position with a drop of super glue. Keep in mind that you should not glue anything but the rim, certainly NOT the discs!
And that's it! you have just made yourself a fancy Splitzer for your Lubitel 166+!
Let me show you some more of the results I got with my new toy! For these photos, I used color filters screwed to the front of the DIY Splitzer (there is enough thread remaining to attach filters to the front).
