Granada, Spain:Rural Eco-Tourism in the Alpujarra

4

Alquería de Morayma – the best rural accommodation ever! I have never stayed in such a place before, and I would have never even found it by myself. But my friends from Barranco Oscuro, the amazing organic vineyard nearby, have recommended this place.

LA CORTIJADA – A traditional group of homesteads and farm buildings has been transformed into an hotel/apartment complex; situated on the southern flank of the Sierra Nevada mountains on a rise above the river Guadalfeo, it enjoys panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada National Park.
THE FARM – Is surrounded by 40 hectares of organically-cultivated vineyards and woodland; almond, fig, olive, and fruit trees abound.

The stuff was amazing. They gave us a map and also made calls to the winery that we wanted to visit to confirm directions. Because it is a rural area up in the mountains, a map is quite useless, so drawings of local “landmarks” such as a big tree really made a difference.

There are 23 accommodation units to choose from, including self-catering ones, but we just went for the cheapest option because unfortunately, we only stayed there for a night. 30 euros for a triple room – amazing!

After we came back from visiting our friends at Barranco Oscuro, we decided to have a meal at the Alquería de Morayma’s restaurant. They had 2 dining rooms but the weather was lovely and we dined outside. Oh my, the fish was delicious! We were suspicious at first because there wasn’t even a menu (now we know that it was due to the dependence on seasonal food), but it was just the best meal ever. So chill, people from big cities! Rural Spain lives in its own time.

On the next morning, I woke up very early (my brother snores a lot, so I couldn’t sleep). I wasn’t surprised to see that my friend Edis has already disappeared from his bed. I quickly found him by the pool enjoying the sunrise and his watermelon. Everyone else was still asleep, so we had the view to ourselves. I don’t often see sunrises so it was very special. The birds were singing and we found a ripe almond tree.

Breakfast was amazing too. They just give you a selection of bread, cheese, jamon, and tomato paste so you can combine your own sandwich. Coffee was great too.

It’s a shame we didn’t stay longer and explored the area by hiking around, but Portugal was waiting for us. I hope I will be back one day! It is a very special place!
