Quail Island, Lyttleton Harbour
Quail Island has been successively a source for seabird's eggs, flax and shellfish; an agricultural area (1851); a quarantine station for immigrants (1875); a leprosy colony (1907). The island was briefly used as a training zone for ponies and dogs prior to Scott's and Shackleton's expeditions to Antarctica.
