We Are Islanders

After Hurricane Harvey, a group of 10 of us from my church, including me, went to help the victims. We were there 9/13-9/21, and I figured I would share these pictures and the story behind them. First off, our group is from an island in the northwest, which makes everyone on our team Islanders. Secondly, like the islanders in Come from Away, we couldn't do nothing when a tragedy had just hit, so just like in the play, we headed out not knowing what to expect but ready to work, and work we did! It doesn't stop there though, because part of our trip was actually during the anniversary of the week after 9/11, so the picture of our team praying is a picture of islanders helping people in the midst of a tragedy exactly 16 years after the event that the play was written about. Lastly, Beverly Bass, one of the pilots the show focuses on, is a Texas native, and it was really amazing getting to visit her state. In the first picture, we had just cleaned out a house that had flood water 3 feet high, and when we started to pray FEMA turned off their machines and joined us in our prayer. It was amazing to see the government and church working together to help this man who had lost everything. The second picture was our day off, we were looking for alligators and I got a picture of our shadows off the bridge. Every story we heard was about the kindness of strangers.
