Winter Motorbike Madness

Saturday night - the crowning glory of the weekend. Old fashioned fun around a campfire, sharing stories, cracking jokes, passing the "bota" of wine around. The idea was to stay up and get as smashed as possible in order to snatch a few hours' sleep - because complete idiots were revving their engines continually, 24 hours per day, and to get any sleep at all in your freezing tent, you'd need to be both drunk and exhausted! Pingüinos 2000 - These photos were taken at the annual "Pingüinos" rally - "The Penguins" that is held every winter in the middle of Castille. It's called "Penguins" for a reason - it's bloody cold! In 2000 it was held in Tordesillas, in the "Valdegalindo" area - a pine forest, perfect for camping. The whole weekend was spent getting drunk, roasting meat on open fires, and generally doing things that are frowned upon by polite society. I rode there on my own, but immediately found a group of Catalan revellers, who had attached a huge "Senyera" Catalan flag to the perimeter fence. They staked a leg of ham to one of the trees and hung a carving knife next to it for anyone who fancied some to cut off a chunk. A group of girls from neighbouring Valladolid came down and several long-lasting relationships were formed that weekend. The photos were shot on an ancient Olympus point-and-shoot, I don't even remember the model, developed locally in Girona early in 2001, and scanned in 2024.
