The old stables

This is possibly the grandest stables ever. They were built by the 5th Duke of Devonshire to serve The Crescent (1784 - 1788). The lower floors were for the horses and the upper for the grooms. The dome was a later addition in 1881 when the stables became a spa. At the time it was built this was the biggest free standing dome in the world with a diameter of 44.2 m, beating the Pantheon (43 m), St Peter's Basilica (42 m) in Rome, and St Paul's Cathedral (34m). It is an amazing building and is now used by the University of Derby.
