Russell (NZ #34)

Russel was once called Kororāreka at the bay of islands and had a bad reputation. It was literally dubbed hellhole of the pacific in the early 1800's, when british and american whalers stopped at the deep- water harbour at the northern tip of New Zealand. Rowdyness, violence, musket wars and romantic fights where a thing. in 1830 two Maori women from different tribal groups fought over on whaling captain, that was a thing, too. Now you can see their remains in Russell, when you take the ferry from Paihia. Loved that day!
