    wow, not amusing my english in comments is so weak.
    anyway: just saw that there is a flickr-page about this photo-opportunity! and i found an explanation why the sign exists and that there seems to be a mistake.
    i quote: I think whoever made this sign made a typo and used an 8 instead of a 5. It would be factually correct and even more amusing if it read Sept 5, 1752 because absolutely nothing happened on the that day due to the date changes of the British Calendar Act of 1751.

    @bloomchen: wow, you have done your homework! However, it's just our British sense of humour :) In Rye, there are many signs dating back to this period so think the person living at this house was having a bit of a laugh!

    well yes, i guess it makes people smile when reading it. i like it. but me personally makes it question why. so the explanation of this guy on flickr seems plausible as 11 days were removed from the calender in 1752.
